TF47-74+1 celebrates Diyandi Festival 2009 with story retelling, oral reading contests

The team of the local Task Force 47-74+1 that works for the reversal of dismal state of education in the elementary level here had a unique way of celebrating the Diyandi Festival this year.
Taking no departure from its goals, they conducted contests on oral reading and story retelling last September 11, 2009 at Iligan City Central Elementary School.
Mr. Doodz Dalangin, executive director of Goodwill Mindanao Philippines Inc. (GMPI) and chair of Diyandi Festival 2009, said "this contest is a historic feat because we included academic-based activities in this festival to what was once a collage of traditional activities of merriment."
Prof. Rhodora Englis of Mindanao State University-IIT expressed that such contest will help improve the level of comprehension and analytic abilities of pupils specially that story retelling requires interpretation which is at the higher level of understanding.
Englis also discussed about the objectives of Task Force 4774+1.
Fely Yu, assistant superintendent of DepEd-Iligan, hope that this activity will be annually done. She was so happy that the Executive Management Board of the festival were able to conceived of this activity.
Mrs. Adelina de Los Reyes, english supervisor of DepEd-Iligan read the criteria of the contest.
Contestants were asked to read three stories prior to the actual competition.
Winners in oral reading are Elinor Grace G. Impang of Iligan City Central School (1st prize); Shaira Claire V. De Gracia of Iligan City East Central School (2nd prize) and Melit Jane R. Yu from Iligan City North 1 Central School (3rd prize).
De Gracia read the story "The Girl Who Turned Into a Fish".
Winners of story retelling are Norjannah Pangandaman of Sgt. Miguel Canoy Memorial Central School (1st prize); Kathleen May Lorraine Nuncio of Iligan City East Central School (2nd prize) and Ch'ry Jynth Mondejar from Tomas Cabili Central School (3rd prize).
The winning piece in this category is the story about "the Toad and the Diamonds."
Winners were awarded with medals, cash prizes, and dictionaries.

TaskForce 4774+1 launches Kaabay sa Kahimsog for all pupils in Iligan

Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz launch a feeding program dubbed "Kaabay sa Kahimsog" on August 15 for all pupils in 82 elementary schools of Iligan city.

This project will be undertaken in partnership with Task Force 4774+1 and the Office of city councilor Voltaire Rovira, chair of the committee on education. It will commence on September 2009.

A P2 million pesos is partially allocated for this project which will also involve and mobilize all Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA).

This feeding program is part of the initiative to ensure the retention and reduce the incidence of drop outs of pupils in the elementary schools.

Cruz said that he intends to allocate P6 million for this program.

Education studes volunteer for remedial reading

A student-teacher from the College of Education of Mindanao State University-IIT, volunteered to help in the remedial reading program for frustrated readers in the elementary level to improve pupils' comprehension and understanding in English subject. This volunteering initiative is organized by Goodwill Mindanao Inc., a partner of local task force. This program is supported by the Office of Congressman Varf Belmonte and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

Engaging parents for children's total development

Parents keenly listen to an orientation on responsible parenting for children in primary grade levels initiated by Goodwill Mindanao Inc., a partner of local task force for remedial reading program and of Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP). Their initiative was also supported by the Office of Congressman Varf Belmonte of the 1st District of Lanao del Norte and Iligan city.

Education Stakeholders' Forum conducted to generate support from local government

Earlier this May of 2009, the local Task Force 47-74+1 conducted a Stakeholders' Forum to inform local officials and members of the civic society of what has been achieved in the whole year of its operation and advocacy. They were also informed on identified programs that necessitate financial support for its realization. The task force lobbied to the local government to access the special education fund and maximize it to improve the state of elementary education of the city.

Workbooks distributed in Iligan for higher NAT performance

ILIGAN CITY (MndaNews/16 February) -- Workbooks for science, English and math subjects designed to improve the comprehension, retention and analytical ability of pupils were distributed last Wednesday to elementary school principals and supervisors with the "aim of improving the passing rate of students in the upcoming National Achievement Test (NAT) by March 3 and 5."

Domingo V. Samson, schools division superintendent, said the worksheets "cover the fourth grading period which students could use for review and could bring at their respective homes."

Said worksheets will be distributed to Grades 6 and 3 pupils. Its production was funded by the city government through the office of the mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz.

Samson mandated teachers to integrate the lessons in these worksheets.

"We use to have an average of 47% of NAT result in 2007 which is way beyond the passing rate and which increase by 2% only in 2008. There is no such thing as impossible. We can slowly rise up from this dismal educational state if we will love our work, if we are true, and are honest always," he said.

This distribution of worksheets is part of the program of Task Force 47-74+1, a multi-sectoral network in the locality that works to contribute to the reversal of the dismal state of the country's educational system.

The task force will also publicize workbooks for students next school year.

Aurea Redondo, of the office of the city mayor, challenged principals and supervisors work together in solving the city's problem in education instead of passing the blame.

"You do not just receive worksheets but also take the cudgels of conscientiously performing the necessary tasks to conduct reviews in the forthcoming National Achievement Test (NAT)," she said.

She reckoned that "Iligan is supposed to be the best producer of manpower. But the dismal result of NAT examinations might severely affect the perceptions of companies who give high regard to our human resources and graduates."

Dr. Rhodora N. Englis, co-chair of the local task force and campus secretary of Mindanao State University-IIT, also updated principals and supervisors on the feeding program for malnourished children in piloted five schools of the city which is implemented by St. Michael's
College in partnership with Jollibee Foundation and other support groups.

Jollibee Foundation committed to feed pupils in four more elementary schools in the coming school year.

Last week, foundation representatives visited their school beneficiaries to monitor and evaluate the impact of their program.

Minnie Dalangin of Goodwill Mindanao, who is part of the task force, told supervisors and principals that they had trained 150 para-teachers from the college of education of MSU-IIT who would help improve the reading ability of pupils who fall within the frustration
level.

Dalangin said that other than remedial reading they will involve the association of parents to truly capacitate them in supporting their children to pass elementary school.

Pilmico gives P500T to Iligan City's education program

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews / September 12) — The Aboitiz-owned flour milling Pilmico Foods Corp. donated P500,000 to the city’s task force on education, to help the city lift the poor performance of its education sector.

“It’s a miracle! Somebody believes in our cause,” said Iligan city mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz, after he signed the deed of donation last Monday.

The Pilmico Foods Corp. donated the money to Task Force 47-74+1, a multi-sectoral movement here to reverse the down trend of the passing rate of pupils in the National Achievement Test (NAT).

The deed of donation stipulated that the “amount is intended for the reproduction of workbooks for grade six pupils which is academically eyed as a tool for the enhancement of their analytical and comprehensive skills”.

“We’re indeed very concern on the low performance of our children. This is a difficult task to accomplish without the benevolent involvement of education stakeholders,” said Reano Gumalo, vice president of the Cebu-based flour milling company.

Gumalo signed the deed of donation for the company. Iligan City schools division superintendent Domingo Samson also signed it. The signing was held September 8.

“We hope that our donation could help improve the learning capabilities of our pupils and may the workbooks hone the reading and analytical skills of pupils; increase their level of comprehension competencies and effectiveness as well as their literacy,” he added. [More at MindaNews]
